Getting used to your new hearing aids
-
Gradually increase usage
Getting used to wearing your new hearing aids takes time. By slowly increasing how much you use them, you'll give your ears and brain a chance to adjust to amplified sound. This gradual increase will also help you get comfortable wearing your aids and fine-tune your settings.
-
Week 1
For the first week, wear your hearing aids for 30 minutes to 2 hours per day. Try using them during conversations or while watching TV. Start with quiet settings before building up to noisier environments. Remove them if you feel discomfort. Keep usage time consistent and limited during this initial adjustment phase.
-
Week 2
In the second week, increase usage to 3-4 hours per day. Wear them during more activities like shopping or light social engagements. Advance to some noisier settings, but remove them if loud environments remain uncomfortable. Build up the time worn each day, but take aids out if you feel pain or want a break.
-
Week 3
In the third week, aim for 6-8 hours of daily usage. Wear your hearing aids during most of your waking hours. Increase usage in harder listening environments, removing only if absolutely necessary. You should now be able to wear them for most typical daily activities.
